High Level - Gateway to the South

The Community

The Town of High Level is a young vibrant community born as a crossroads on the new Mackenzie Highway to the north in 1942. Earlier, trails went from Hay Lakes to Meander River and Ft. Vermilion and points in between used by Dene, Beaver and Cree peoples and fur traders. Today its rich resources of forestry, oil and gas and cleared agricultural land bring prosperity to the town and region.

Located on the Mackenzie Highway, approximately 800 kms from Edmonton and 724 kms south of Yellowknife, High Level is a transportation and service centre of 4,199 persons for a large trading area of northwestern Alberta of over 22,000 people.

High Level provides a solid core of community services, provincial government branch offices, retail shopping, industry services, schools, a college, a new hospital, swimming pool and arena among many other facilities. In addition there is a long list of active community organizations and service groups.

Linked by highway, scheduled daily air service, daily Greyhound bus service and rail, the town is a transportation hub. High Level population grows by an average of 3% per year, and shows an ever changing face.
